The foundations of Values-based Education
Practice
An idea developed through lived school experience
Movement
A growing international community of educators
Values-based Education was founded in 1993. Neil’s history explains how the concept emerged, how it was first put into practice and how it has developed.
The history is intended for researchers, schools considering VbE, current practitioners and anyone examining how education can help students develop the dispositions needed for a sustainable, peaceful and harmonious world.
From school practice to a wider movement
The history follows VbE from its beginnings in 1993 through its development in schools and its contribution to a worldwide conversation about the purpose of education.
Neil also records the contribution of Professor Terry Lovat and Newcastle University’s extensive Australian research into the effects of Values Education. Their work strengthened the evidence that an explicit values focus can affect relationships, teaching, learning and the wider culture of a school.
